Description
Oscar Micheaux (1884-1951) occupies a unique niche in motion picture history, as a black producer/director/screenwriter who created movies aimed at a black audience.
His movie career spanned 1919 to 1948. Few of his films have survived. His best known silent was 1925's "Body & Soul," Paul Robeson's first film.

Paul Robeson (1898-1976) was a Rhodes scholar, All-American athlete, pro football player and graduate of Columbia law school.
Playwright Eugene O'Neill personally asked him to perform in his "Emperor Jones."
Edward Steichen took a classic photo of Robeson in costume from "Jones."
Robeson was also a singer. He sang "Ol' Man River" in James Whale's directed "Showboat"(1936).

Robeson played the lead role in "Othello" (1943-1945). It still is the longest running play by Shakespeare on Broadway.
His political/humanitarian beliefs resulted in persecution by the FBI in the 1940's and 1950's.
Oscar Micheaux was honored by the US Postal Service on a 44 cents stamp.
