Description
Robert Louis Stevenson's (1850-1894) novella "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" or just "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was published in 1886.
The good doctor could have very well used this 1880 lab to create the potion to transform himself into the vile Hyde.
There have been numerous motion pictures which dramatized the Stevenson work, played by such outstanding actors as John Barrymore, Fredric March, Spencer Tracy, Jack Palance and Michael Caine; not counting the best forgotten endless low budget turkeys aimed for the less discriminating, involving mad scientists and their evil creations.
The first (and still considered the best) is the Barrymore version. It was shot at the newly opened Astoria Studios on Long Island. His transformation were all created in the camera using various filters.
This lab, on the corner of Main and Congress, dates from 1880 when the Jacob's Assay Office opened in Tucson. The barrio building was torn down shortly after in late 1969 as part of Urban Renewal.
The building had no air conditioning. Proprietor Benjamin Jacob's would open the front and rear doors and throw water on the wooden floors during the sweltering summers.
{NOTE: A radio adaptation of "Jekyll & Hyde," starring Fredric March and Barbara Bel Geddes, was broadcast by the Theater Guild on the Air. n.d.}
