Description
Erich von Stroheim (1885-1957) wins the gold watch for having little sense of the practical when writing/directing films; specially with time and money.
Both he and Cecil B. DeMille appear as actors in Billy Wilder's "Sunset Blvd" (1950).

Von Stroheim's masterpiece is "Greed" (1924) based on Frank Norris' novel "McTeague" (1899).

In 1999 Turner Enertainment sought to recreate "Greed's" lost footage by using stills that had been shot during the production. This version runs nearly four hours. Stroheim's original cut was nine and one half hours. He then trimmed it to six hours for screening in two nights with intermissions. Finally, with the help of fellow director Rex Ingram, he cut it to four hours for showing in two parts.
He received no salary while editing.
MGM finally released the project at about two hours and 20 minutes. The excised footage is considered "The Holy Grail" of lost footage. Supposedly it still existed in the MGM vaults until the late 1950's.
While panned by critics and the public when released the extant version was selected in 1991 for preservation in the National Film Registry.
Dale Fuller (1885-1948) plays the Mexican hag, Maria Miranda Micapa, who collects junk and is obsessed with gold, especially plates. She fantasizes that her father had owned a leather trunk filled with dishes and other gold plated objects; some 100 in all.
