Artist's Description

Allan Dwan (!885-1981) estimated that he had directed over 1,400 films, including his numerous one reelers, in his 50 years plus career.

Tucson's Lyric Theater in 1919 showed his adventure tale "Soldiers of Fortune," starring Wallace Beery.

This was a full decade before he had become MGM's most highly paid contract actor. Beery entered films in the early teens, improbably as a burly Irish maid, in a comedy series for Essanay.

Little is known about the Lyric other that it was built in the teens, demolished in 1966, and seated 913.

In 1930, construction was started on the more upscale Fox Tucson Theater, a block away.

In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
