Artist's Description

Allan Dwan (1885-1981) estimated that he had directed over 1,400 films, including his numerous one reelers, in his 50 years plus career.

Tucson's Lyric Theater in 1919 showed his adventure tale "Soldiers of Fortune," starring Wallace Beery.

Little is known about the Lyric other that it was built in the teens, demolished in 1966, and seated 913.

In 1930, construction was started on the more upscale Fox Tucson Theater, a block away.

The Ivancovich & Co. Building is at the end of the block, with a purple dome I painted in 2008.

Allan Dwan's most celebrated sound film is 1949's "The Sands of Iwo Jima" staring John Wayne; Duke's first Academy Award nomination. He lost to Broderick Crawford. But he...

About David Lee Guss

David Lee Guss

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
