"The Battle of the Century" was held on July 4th 1910 in Reno, Nevada. The event was the heavyweight championship boxing bout between Jack Johnson and former champ Jim Jeffries.
The match was adapted into a 1967 Howard Sackler (1929-1982) play, "The Great White Hope," staged on Broadway and later filmed in 1969 by 20th Century Fox on a recreated set in Globe, Arizona.
John Wayne plays a boxer in John Ford's celebrated fairy tale of a mythical Ireland in Republic Pictures' 1952 released "The Quiet Man."
{Note: Duke has an extended slug fest with Victor McLaglen (1886-1958) in "Man." In 1909 Victor fought a 6 rounds exhibition bout in Vancouver with Johnson.}

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
