Description
A dust laden bulb hangs suspended from the ceiling. I imagine it hadn't been used for decades. I had to use a 12 feet step ladder to take the photo. Today I would be afraid of falling off.
Owner Benjamin Jacobs worked every day of the week - "10 hours a day on weekdays, 8 hours on Saturday and 6 hours on Sunday."
The business moved to South Tucson on 10th Avenue in late 1969, transporting all the equipment.
Jacob's passed on the business to his son Mike in 1976. In July 2011 the great-grand son of the original owner Washington Jacobs announced that his office was winding down - no longer performing fire and wet assays, "complex tests mainly used to test the metal content of ores."
Instead of seven days Jacob's would only operate on Thursdays and Fridays to test bullion or gold ingots
The Assay Office remains open and is listed in the yellow pages.
