Artist's Description
"Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art."
"You've got to learn your instrument. Then, you practice, practice, practice. And then, when you finally get up there on the bandstand, forget all that and just wail."
"realized by using the high notes of the chords as a melodic line, and by the right harmonic progression, I could play what I heard inside me. That's when I was born."....Charlie Parker, 1920-1955
"I'm always thinking about creating. My future starts when I wake up every morning... Every day I find something creative to do with my life."
"Don't play what's there, play what's not there."
"It's always been a gift with me, hearing music the way I do. I don't know where it comes from, it's just there and I don't question it."...Miles Davis, 1926-1991

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
