Description
Bullfighter with his raised sword about to be thrust into the weakened bull in the Plaza de Toros at Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, 1969.
Bull fight aficionado, writer Dick Frontain is the tall, bespectacled man in the back. Strangely he is not shooting at this climatic moment of the sport, some consider an art.
Others find it barbaric. Frontain (1932-2007) extensively photographed artist Ted DeGrazia, as his quasi official lens man.
Frontain was an amateur matador himself, even traveling annually to Madrid, Spain to squeeze in viewing as many bullfights he could in three weeks time.
In his obituary the teacher and author of several books is quoted, shortly before his death, as saying he saw his first bullfight in Juarez in 1955 and "was immediately drawn to it."
"After the bull has been hooked multiple times behind the shoulder by other matadors in the arena, the bullfight usually concludes with the killing of the bull by a single sword thrust, which is called the estocada."
