Description
A boxing collage is hung above the bar in the Virginian Hotel Saloon, Medicine Bow, Wyoming. The two large photos on the bottom are from the July 4th, Reno, Nevada bout between Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries.
Owen Wister (1860-1938) is considered the father of western fiction. His 1901 work, "The Virginian," is the first cowboy novel. It proved so popular that it was reprinted 14 times in eight months. And it has been filmed five times, first in 1914 by director Cecil B. DeMille (1881-1959), starring Dustin Farnum (1874-1929).
The 1929 classic early talkie, starring Gary Cooper (1901-1961), is recognized as the best version, even if a bit creaky today. "You want to call me that, smile" line to villain Walter Huston (1884-1950), as Trampas, has entered film dialogue lore.

The film is directed by Victor Fleming (1889-1949), who started off in pictures as a camera assistant for Allan Dwan (1885-1981). Today he is best remembered as the director of two classics from 1939, "Wizard of Oz" and "Gone With the Wind." 1939 is considered the high water mark in Hollywood history.
The Virginian" was written in Medicine Bow, Wyoming. The historic (1902/1911) Virginian Hotel in Medicine Bow is thought to have been named after the novel.
This boxing mural hangs over the hotel's elegant bar.
{NOTE: The Lux Radio Theater aired "The Virginian," hosted by Cecil B. DeMille and starring Cooper & Mary Brian, on 11/02/36.}
