Description
Another Arizona mining town that was on the verge of extinction was Bisbee, Arizona situated in a valley a short distance from the US/Mexico border.
Bisbee was founded in 1880 "as a copper, gold and silver mining town." This postcard featuring, a vintage photograph, commemorated the centennial.
Phelps Dodge closed their underground mines in the summer of 1975. They owned the historic Copper Queen Hotel which the company put up for sale in 1970. Locals declined to purchase the deed to the hotel for $1.00.
Artist Stephen Hutchinson and his wife Marcia purchased the hotel in 1970 and renovated it. (I served with Stephen as a member of the Tucson Film Commission in 1981-84.)
As happened in Jerome artists came to the town and snapped up the boarded up buildings at fire sale prices.
