Description
Pioneer cinematographer Billy Bitzer (1872-1944) and director D.W. Griffith (1875-1948) filmed "Way Down East" in 1920.
(They first collaborated in the one reel, 10 minute "Adventures of Dolly" in 1908.)
"Way Down East" climaxed in a blinding ice storm.

"East" was Griffith's last great box office triumph as his Victorian sensibilities became unfashionable in "The Roaring Twenties."
Orson Welles (1915-1985) considered Griffith the greatest of all silent film directors with Jean Renoir (1894-1979) the finest director of talking pictures.
