This endlessly reproduced photo of Geronimo kneeling was taken In May 1887 either by Ben Wittick (1845-1903) or his business partner A. Frank Randall on the San Carlos Reservation. It was originally sold as an albumen print.
Geronimo was a fearless warrior whose name since resonates today. In WW2 American paratroopers called out his name before jumping into space. In 2011 The US military used his name as a code name in the mission that killed Osama bin Laden.
In 1906 he published his autobiography. Geronimo had a special hatred for the Mexican military since, in 1858 they massacred his wife, mother, and three children.
Tombstone photographer C.S. Fly was the official photographer who documented the surrender of Geronimo and his band to General Crook.
I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life.
