Description
"The Cowboys" was one of the few times John Wayne was killed in a movie.
The 1971 production was shot in three locations in New Mexico, in the same general vicinity as this church. The San Francisco Church in the ghost town of Golden, New Mexico was built in 1830, years before the territory became part of the US.
"The Cowboys" was largely shot on the San Cristobal ranch near Santa Fe and Los Cerrillos under the direction of stage trained New Yorker Mark Rydell.
Only Actor's Studio personnel were hired. Duke did not have his usual drinking buddies/cronies working with him.
This photo of the church was taken in January 1972. The adobe structure was built in 1830 of adobe and restored in the 1960's. The area was first inhabited more than 1,500 years ago.
