Description
Roy Rogers and Dale Evans' tenure at Republic overlapped Duke's there.
When Gene Autry went into the service during WW2, Rogers became the resident "singing cowboy" at Republic.
And like Gene they migrated to TV when that medium became a better market for their brand of Westerns. Aside from an occasional guest appearance, Duke Wayne was too big a star to become a TV performer in a series.
He was offered the role of Marshall Dillon in "Gunsmoke," but declined and recommended his friend James Arness (1923-2011) who accepted and was a CBS fixture for 20 years (1955-1975).
