Description
Andy Warhol appropriated the head of Geronimo from Ben Wittick's classic 1887 picture of the Apache resistance fighter for his "Cowboys and Indians" suite of 10 silk-screens. The series, paying homage to the myth of the American West, was completed one year before Warhol's death in 1987.
Geronimo, along with General George Armstrong Custer and Teddy Roosevelt, represented heroes of the West while Annie Oakley and John Wayne stood for Western film heroes.
Warhol used a publicity photo from "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" as his template for Duke.
