Description
When Gary Cooper saw "Rio Bravo" he said
"It was so phony, nobody believes it."
It was Duke's and college football chum Ward Bond's last and 22nd film together. Script writer Jules Furthman and director Howard Hawks had started in pictures during the silent era. The first four minutes (including the credits) of "Bravo" have no dialogue.
The sets built at Old Tucson, Arizona are 7/8th scale so the performers look larger.
The Howard Hawks' "Red River" buckle given by him to Duke is clearly visible in this publicity photo.
@2013 David Lee Guss Film homage, John Wayne, publicity photo, Rio Bravo, 1959, Old Tucson, AZ, 1959-2013.
