Description
What can be said about this classic that is fresh. Well, not much. Can you imagine Lloyd Nolan as the Ringo Kid? That was Duke's suggestion when the ever sly John Ford asked him about casting.
"Well, I guess you can't break out of prison and into society in the same week."
"You may need this Winchester Curly, I saw a house burnin' last night."
"My friends just call me Ringo - nickname I had as a kid. Right name's Henry."
"Well, there are some things a man just can't run away from...John Wayne as the Ringo Kid
"Stagecoach" was an independent film produced by Walter Wanger (1894-1968). The negative was beyond repair having been ripped apart for the making of trailers. Archivist David Shepard retrieved a fine grain positive 35 mm print from Duke's private collection, the only one of its kind.
The masterpiece was shot by Burt Glennon (1895-1967) who was rewarded with an Oscar. Glennon was a director of photography from 1916 until his retirement in 1964. He first worked with John Ford in "The Prisoner of Shark Island," 1936 then "The Hurricane," 1937, "Young Mr. Lincoln," and "Drums Along the Mohawk, (both 1939, as was "Stagecoach," "Wagonmaster" and "Rio Grande," both 1950 and finally "Sergeant Rutledge," 1960. William Clothier (1903-1923) shot many of John Ford's and John Wayne's subsequent films.
