Artist's Description

Jack Palance first garnered attention in Westerns for his riveting portrayal of sadistic gunslinger Jack Wilson in George Steven's classic Western "Shane" (1953), an adaptation of Jack Schaefer's novel.

Palance had yet to know how to ride a horse when he began shooting the film in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Palance was honored with a best supporting Oscar for his comic rendering of the grizzled cowboy, Curly, in "City Slickers" (1991).

"The only two things you can truly depend upon are gravity and greed."

"I go to see maybe seven films a year at the most, and since I only go to see the best, it follows that I very rarely see my own."... Jack Palance

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
