Artist's Description

Bassist Charles Mingus (1922-1979) was known as "The Angry Man of Jazz," for his explosive temper. He is often overlooked as one of the most important composers and performers of jazz. He briefly was a member of Duke Ellington's band, and has the distinction of being the only artist fired personally by Ellington. 1953's "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" is acknowledged for its greatness, complete with liner notes written by Mingus' psychotherapist.

Mingus suffered from Lou Gehrig's Disease. He died in Mexico, as did Steve McQueen the following year in 1980. Mingus was born in Nogales, Arizona.

I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
