Artist's Description

The B-17G Flying Fortress "Sentimental Journey" is on display in Avra Valley, Arizona, 1991. It is named after the early 1945 recorded song made popular by singer Doris Day and band leader Les Brown. The tune became an anthem for G.I.'s longing to return home.

The posing woman is Betty Grable (1916-1973) the most popular pinup of that era.

The "SJ" is based in an air museum in Mesa, Arizona.

The craft is only one of 11 B-17's left; manufactured in 1944 it only saw action in March 1945.

I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
