Description
Not that far from the fabled Shubert Theater in Boston was that city's "Combat Zone," renown for its sleeze as was New York City's 42nd Street. While the Shubert is known as "The Little Princess," this could have called as "The Side Walk Sleep-In." The "Combat Zone" is no more as is this movie house, rendered obsolete by home video and the internet.
The Pilgrim "opened as Gordon's Olympia Theater on May 6, 1912 with photoplays and vaudeville." After a period of showing second-run motion pictures it degenerated to screening sexploitation films as did so many theaters with the great success of 1972's "Deep Throat." (Rumored to be a particular favorite of Fred Astaire.) The Pilgrim was leveled in 1996.
The streamlined ticket booth is remindful of "Art Moderne" architecture popular in the US from 1925 to the early 1940's.
