Description
Lee Marvin (1924-1987) had the title role in "Monte Walsh," adapated from the 1963 novel by Jack Schaefer. His novel "Shane" had been made into the classic "Shane," directed by the methodical George Stevens.
While Stevens spent months editing it, wide screen films were introduced by Darryl F. Zanuck at Fox to bring back film goers who stayed home watching free TV. The Cinemascope process was so successful that other studios quickly abandoned the more squarish frame size in use since the days of Thomas Edison's 1894 shorts.
Loyal Grigg's exquisite cinematography of Jackson Hole, Wyoming was cut down to the new format. Even with the top and bottom of the frame shorn away he still won an Oscar for the picture.
I met Lee Marvin several times, as we both lived in Tucson, Arizona. I'll leave my observations about him to my eventual vanishingamericanwest site.
The ex-marine sniper is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
