Artist's Description

John Garfield, born Jules Garfinkle, was known as Julie, by his friends. His was the most prominent film career destroyed by the infamous black list. He refused to name names before the House Un-American Activities Committee. The stress and a weak heart caused his premature death at 39 in 1952. He remains one of my favorite screen actors.

This is a publicity photo from the 1948 film noir "Force of Evil" which Garfield produced. The film's director Abraham Polonsky was blacklisted for twenty years.
