Description
Jean-Paul Belmondo is considered the French Humphrey Bogart, and in the film openly mimics several of Bogie's mannerisms. "Breathless" (1960) was dedicated to Monogram, a "poverty row" film studio.
The film critic, turned director, Jean-Luc Godard was a scholar of American films. He was "moved to tears" in a darkened Paris theater when John Wayne swooped Nataie Wood into his arms after years of hate searching for her.

Godard had little money for "Breathless," so he had cinematographer Raoul Coutard shot it with a handheld Eclair Cameflex camera, using mostly available light; viewing the production as a documentary. The camera was noisy so most of the dialogue had to be re-recorded in post-production.
The dialogue was written daily by Godard, who strongly encouraged improvisation from his actors.
The company just took to the streets with no permission for shooting in the various Paris locations. Scenes were briefly rehearsed and then filmed.
It was Godard's first feature and is important as inaugurating the French New Wave, along with Truffaut's "The 400 Blows" and Alain Resnais' "Hiroshima Mon Amour" (both from 1959). The "jump cuts" in the film were startling for the time.
In a 1961 interview, Belmondo talks about the making of "Breathless," which translates "at breath's end" in English. He had wanted to be a boxer but decided that acting was less physically harmful.

A digitally restored 50th anniversary version of "Breathless" was released in 2010.
