Description
This recreated scene is of a newsreel cameraman filming the hoopla on July 4th, 1910, in Reno, Nevada. The event was a heavyweight boxing match between champ Jack Johnson and former champ Jim Jeffries.
Newsreels were begun in France in 1906, but started in the US shortly before this event.
"The Great White Hope" is a fictionalized account of Johnson's tribulations in a racist society. He was the first black heavyweight champion. So a "White Hope" was needed to dethrone him.
The main street of Globe, Arizona was made over to simulate Reno in 1910.
