Description
Jack Pierce designed and applied the makeup to Boris Karloff in 1931's "Frankenstein" and its far better sequel "Bride of Frankenstein," 1935.
Karloff was third billed as "Dr. Hollingshead" in the 1947 Danny Kaye comedy "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." There was to be a dream sequence with Karloff appearing as "The Monster." It was filmed but not included in the final cut of the picture.
After working 30 years at Universal, the Greek born Pierce was let go. He ended up as the makeup department head on the TV show "Mister Ed."
"In so far as character makeup is concerned, the work of the makeup artist is closely akin to that of a cinematographer. Each is a creative art of the utmost order."...Jack Pierce (1889-1968)
