Description
This clown from the John A. Strong Circus, which had erected tents a short distance south of Bisbee, Arizona near the US/Mexico border, reminds me of Charlie Chaplin's "The Circus" (1928) the great comedians last silent film.
Like Ted, another prominent American artist who was taken by motion pictures, was Edward Hopper (1882-1967).
While the Lyric in Bisbee is a small town version of weaving dreams in the dark, Hopper's oil "New York Movie," 1939 features an usherette alone in her thoughts in a New York City movie palace with its enormous screen in the background.
Hopper's most celebrated oil is "Nighthawks" (1942) whose lighting is reminiscent of the look of film noir that was just emerging as a film style in The US.
DeGrazia's friend Broderick Crawford appeared in six noirs: "Black Angel" (1946), "Convicted" (1950), "The Mob" (1951), "Scandal Sheet" (1952), "Down Three Dark Streets" (1954), "Human Desire" (1954) and "The Big House" (1955). The golden era of film noir would end in the late 1950's.
Crawford gave one of his finest performances in the little seen today, Federico Fellini's "Il Bidone" (1955). "He is eloquent and moving as the petty thief and con artist who attempts to redeem himself for the sake of his adoring daughter. The tragic final image of 'Il Bidone' with Crawford alone and dying beside a deserted mountain road, is one of the most heartbreaking in the history of cinema."
