Artist's Description

June Lockhart is the daughter of celebrated film character Gene Lockhart (1891-1957). 1947's "T-Men" is her only film noir. A year later Lockhart won a Tony for her first Broadway appearance.

"T- Men" is directed by Anthony Mann (1906-1967) and features his frequent collaborator as director of photography, John Alton (1901-1996).

A flashing hotel sign underscores Charles McGraw's interrogation of Dennis O'Keefe (1908-1968) in T-Men.

Alton masterfully controls light and shadows as in this famous steam bath sequence with gravel throated killer Charles McGraw (1914-1980) and his victim Wallace Ford (1898-1966).

Ironically in real life McGraw died when he slipped in a shower and fell through a glass door.

About David Lee Guss

David Lee Guss

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
