This clown from the John A. Strong Circus, which had erected tents a short distance south of Bisbee, Arizona near the US/Mexico border, reminds me of Charlie Chaplin's "The Circus" (1928) the great comedian's last silent film.
Like Ted, another prominent American artist who was taken by motion pictures, was Edward Hopper (1882-1967).
While the Lyric in Bisbee is a small town version of weaving dreams in the dark, Hopper's oil "New York Movie," 1939 features an usherette alone in her thoughts in a New York City movie palace with its enormous screen in the background.
Hopper's most celebrated oil is "Nighthawks" (1942) whose lighting is reminiscent of the look of film noir that was just emerging as a film style in The US.

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978.
