Artist's Description

John Wayne plays a West Point football hero "cad" in this 1931 Columbia picture. Studio head Harry Cohn fired Wayne and tried to blackball him in Hollywood.

Duke never made a Columbia film the remaining 45 years of his career. His co-star is silent film actress Laura La Plante (1904-1996). She retired in 1935 and reappeared only twice in character parts in 1946 and 1957.

Cohn (1891-1958) was a shrewd studio head who, through grit, intimidation and animal cunning, elevated Columbia from the subterranean depths of "Poverty Row." "He was probably the most feared and hated man in Hollywood." Legend has it that when he died some went to his well attended funeral just to make sure he was dead.

Comedian Red Skelton (1910-1997) famously quipped, "It proves what Harry always said: Give the people what they want and they'll come out for it."

About David Lee Guss

David Lee Guss

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
